In a remarkable enforcement operation, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has arrested 51 irregular migrants believed to be victims of human trafficking in the New Nyanya area of Karu Local Government, Nasarawa State. The apprehension highlights a growing concern regarding the safety of migrants and the alarming rise in human trafficking activities in the region.

The operation took place after the NIS received credible intelligence regarding the presence of a large group of undocumented migrants in the area. Upon their investigation, officials determined that the migrants lacked valid travel documents or residence permits, raising suspicions that they had been coerced into this hazardous journey.

According to a statement from NIS spokesperson AS Akinlabi released on Wednesday, the group is comprised of 11 females and 40 males, all aged between 16 and 19. It is believed that many of them were lured from their home country, Mali, under false pretenses in search of better economic opportunities. 

“Preliminary investigations suggest that these individuals may have been victims of human trafficking and migrant smuggling,” Akinlabi stated, emphasizing the urgent need for continued vigilance and action against such networks. The NIS is actively working to identify the circumstances surrounding their travel and the individuals responsible for their trafficking. 

The teenagers have been placed in protective custody, where authorities will conduct further inquiries to ascertain their identities and the full extent of their situation. The NIS has also expressed its commitment to collaborating with relevant stakeholders to provide the necessary support and legal protection to the victims.

This recent event underscores a disturbing trend involving the vulnerability of young migrants in West Africa. Many individuals, driven by the dream of a better life, find themselves ensnared in the dangerous networks of traffickers and smugglers.
